Records tumble at Snowman Shoot

January 29, 2012 : Club Events, News

A record equalling turn out of 52 archers braved the freezing conditions on the 29th to take part in St George’s Archery Club’s 8th annual Snowman Shoot which was held on the club’s ground at St John Fisher School.  Members of the Harrogate club were joined for the shoot by guests from neighbouring clubs Riggwelter Field Archers and Thirsk Bowmen.

The round was four dozen arrows shot at specially designed target faces and the shoot was handicapped according to bow-type and experience so that all of the archers could compete against each other.  The scoring was exceptional with the records for three of the shoot’s four classes being broken and the other being equalled.

Guest of Honour, Kath Street, presented Chris Francis with the prize for the highest senior score of the day.  Novice archer Jeanette Ives claimed second place and Brian Hiscutt third.  Chris’s score of 255 beat the existing club record, set by tournament organiser Carol Fairbrother back in 2008, by 25 points.

In the under 18 category novice recurve archer Sarah Richardson took first place and also claimed a club record with her score of 233.  Karl Sierevogel of Thirsk was second closely followed by Inez Tully.

The scoring in the under 13 class was particularly close.  Novice Joshua Baron shot superbly and his score of 204 was the third club record of the day.  Second place went to Tom Ketley and third to Ben Daniel, with Harry Street, Chris Hill and Lewis Francis being only a handful of points behind.

Other prizewinners were Jacob Greenwood for the best white and Charles Rawson who equalled the club record set last year by fellow compound archer Jon Overfield for the most golds.

Exceptional Scores at Brass Monkey Clout

January 16, 2012 : Competition, News
20 members of Harrogate’s St George’s Archery Club travelled to Baldersby St. James last weekend to take part in the friendly Brass Monkey Clout shoot against neighbours Thirsk Bowmen.
Clout is a form of the sport where archers attempt to drop arrows as near as possible to a 12 inch square flag placed at 180 yards for gents, 140 yards for ladies and various distances dependent on age for juniors, and St George’s are among the premier clout clubs in the country with members holding titles and records at Yorkshire, Regional and British level.

Despite the shoot being a friendly season-opener some of the scoring was exceptional with junior archers Tom Woolley (under 18 longbow), (Harry Street under 14 bare bow) and Ben Daniel (under 12 barebow) both continuing their fine form from last year.
New members Hayley Kemp, Karl Walker and Michael Stretton, all shooting barebow, also acquitted themselves really well in their first clout competition.
Thanks were extended to Thirsk Bowmen their hosting of the shoot and the friendly rivalry between the two clubs will be resumed later in the month when Thirsk join St George’s for their annual Snowman Target Shoot.
There is now a short break in the clout calendar until the Barbara Williams Memorial Shoot in March which marks the start of the 2012 competition season in earnest.

Record Rankings Success for St George’s Archers

December 29, 2011 : Competition, News

The British clout archery rankings for the 2011 calendar year have just been released and St George’s Archery Club of Harrogate have 14 members featuring in the top rankings, the highest number in the club’s history.  The rankings are based on the sum of an individual’s top three scores in open competitions held throughout the year.

Carol Fairbrother is the number one ranked British lady barebow archer for the fourth time.  This reflects another excellent year for Carol in which she won eight competitions including the Yorkshire and Regional Championships.  Moira Salmons made superb progress throughout the year.  In October she was presented the highest award in clout archery, the purple tassel, for her score of 175 at York Archers’ shoot and her progress is reflected in her ranking jumping from 9th in 2010 to 3rd in 2011.   Hazel Ketley (19th) also shot exceptionally well in her first competitive season to feature in the rankings.

Tom Woolley is the number one ranked junior longbow archer by a margin of over 150 points.  Tom retained his British title this year despite having to move up shortly before the National Championships from the u16 distance of 120 yards to the u18 distance of 140 yards.  Tom Ketley and Ben Daniel are ranked 3rd and 4th respectively in the junior barebow category.  They both shot superbly in their first year in the sport with Tom winning the Northern Counties Championships and Ben the Durham and Northumberland title.  They each claimed two Yorkshire record scores and hopes are high for their continued progress in 2012.

In a very competitive gentleman barebow category Nigel Cockshott was ranked at number 10, with Mike Salt improving from 17th last year to 14th, Dave Strike moving up from 21st to 16th, and Dennis Ketley rounding off his first season of shooting in a very creditable 22nd.

The club’s longbow archers also fared well with Clive Woolley improving from 19th last year to 9th and Rod Spink, Steve Lilley and Geoff Oliver featuring at 14th, 15th and 27th respectively.

St George’s travel to Thirsk next weekend for the friendly Brass Monkey Clout against Thirsk Bowmen and the Company of Scorton Archers before the competition season commences in earnest in April.
