Barbara Williams Clout 2006
On Sunday 7th May 2006 St. George’s Archery Club held their 4th
Barbara Williams Memorial Clout shoot on St John Fisher School’s
playing fields in Harrogate.
Barbara Williams was a much-loved club member with a great
enthusiasm for archery, particularly Clout, and her estate kindly
donated a silver tankard to be used as a prize for a club competition
set up in her memory.
Clout is a form of archery where archers attempt to drop arrows as
near as possible to a flag placed at 180 yards for gents, 140 yards for
ladies and various distances dependent on age for juniors.
Despite the wet weather there was an excellent turnout of both
experienced and novice archers with a range of different bows who,
using a handicap system, were all able to compete against each other.
The prizewinners were:
Overall - Carol Fairbrother
1st Gent - Clive Roebuck
1st Junior - Max Dutton

2nd Annual St. Georges Archery Club Snowman Shoot
On the morning of Sunday 29th of January over 30 archers of St.
George’s A.C. Harrogate left their nice warm homes to participate in
the club’s annual Snowman Shoot.
The morning was cold and clear with the temperature a little above
freezing. Assembly was at 10:30 and thankfully our Field Captain, Clive
Roebuck, kept his introduction and explanation of the rules short and
sweet thus saving us from the onset of hypothermia.
The Snowman targets, which had been created by Carol Fairbrother the
shoot organiser, were printed on the back of a 122cm target face. The
scoring followed G.N.A.S. 9 for the ‘golden’ carrot that was his nose,
7 for his red scarf and hat band, 5 for the blue sky, which was adorned
with snow flakes, 3 for any black area these being his top hat, pipe
and other bits and 1 for a white which was the predominant colour on
the target. The colours were placed so that all the higher scoring
colours were surrounded by colours having a low value making high
scoring difficult and generating various mutterings at the target face
when collecting arrows.
Further scoring temptations were four balloons attached to each
target face outside the scoring areas; these were worth 10 points if
you could burst one. Miss and you had a zero unless of course you
managed to hit a balloon which, due to the breeze, had partly blown
into a scoring zone.
Four dozen arrows were shot at distances of 50, 40, 30, 20 yards
depending on bow type and experience, after two dozen arrows had been
shot we had a welcome break when copious amounts of chilli, hot soup
and bread rolls were consumed followed by some wonderful confectionary.
On completion of the shoot commemorative snowmen containing sweets
were awarded by our Lady Paramounts to the winners. This included a
prize for the most noses and the usual ‘worst white’ which proved very
entertaining to judge due to the target design.
Despite the cold weather the event was enjoyed by all who attended and once more proved to be good fun.
