Summer Handicap League 2012 Rules

EDIT: Just to make it clear if you don’t have a handicap at the moment then to have the best chance in the competition you need to shoot 3 simple (e.g. Warwick) rounds to gain a handicap and THEN shoot your first round for the competition BEFORE 31st May.

Yorkshire Championship success for Harrogate archers

Members of St George’s Archery Club had their most successful ever Yorkshire Championships last weekend taking four individual titles, a team title and a number of other medals and awards. 18 members of the club took part in the Championships which were held at the Archers of East Riding’s ground near Driffield in very difficult blustery and changeable conditions including intervals of snow, rain and sunshine with a very strong and variable tail/crosswind throughout.

St George’s won gold and silver in the gent’s barebow competition with Club President Clive Roebuck regaining the title he previously won in 2009 and Gary Street (featured left) shooting a personal best score to claim second place.

The club also took two medals in the ladies’ barebow category with Carol Fairbrother winning by a margin of over 50 points to become Yorkshire Champion for the 7th consecutive year.  Lesley Wallace continued her excellent form from last season taking the bronze medal.

In a high scoring gent’s longbow competition Clive Woolley was awarded the bronze medal.

The club’s junior archers shot particularly well.  Joe Wallace won the u14 compound competition improving his own club record for the double 100 yard clout round. Tom Ketley came second in the u14 barebow class with a club record score for the double round and Harry Street was third having shot superbly in the first half of the competition to post a new Yorkshire record score for the single clout.

Ben Daniel won the u12 barebow championship and Chris Hill, who was taking part in his first open competition, shot exceptionally well to claim third place and a black tassel award for his score of 89 points.

St George’s barebow team of Carol Fairbrother, Clive Roebuck and Ben Daniel won the barebow team championship, adding the Yorkshire title to the Northern Counties and British team trophies that the club already hold.

Record turnout for Barbara Williams Memorial Shoot

A record turn out of 37 members of St George’s Archery Club took part in the 10th Barbara Williams Memorial Clout which was held on the club’s ground at St John Fisher School last weekend.

Barbara was a much-loved club member with a great enthusiasm for archery, particularly Clout, and her estate kindly donated a silver tankard to be used as a prize for a club competition set up in her memory.

Once the early fog lifted conditions were perfect and some excellent scores were recorded with a handicap system enabling archers of different bowstyles and experience to shoot against each other.

Novice barebow archer Mike Stretton was the winner of the gent’s competition with club President, Clive Roebuck, in second and Roger Honeysett, who only completed his beginners’ course last weekend, shooting exceptionally well to claim third place.

Tournament organiser Carol Fairbrother won ladies’ section and also the Ted Mallet Award for the best arrow of the day.  Carol Spencer was second and Moira Salmons third whilst Natalie Webster narrowly outscored Sylvia Bear in the beginners’ category.

Tom Woolley, who holds five Yorkshire records for clout archery, continued his fine form from last season by winning the u18 competition with Joe Wallace and Inez Tully second and third.  John Backshall put in an excellent score to win the beginners’ award.

Scoring in the u13 section was particularly close with Ben Daniel claiming first place closely followed by Tom Ketley, Chris Hill and Harry Street.  Tom’s base score of 48 was confirmed as a new club record for the 100 yard barebow round.

The Barbara Williams Memorial Trophy for the best overall score was presented by Guest of Honour, Mandy Hill, to Mike Stretton and the clout competition season gets underway in earnest next month with the Yorkshire Championships which are being held near Driffield.

Records tumble at Snowman Shoot

A record equalling turn out of 52 archers braved the freezing conditions on the 29th to take part in St George’s Archery Club’s 8th annual Snowman Shoot which was held on the club’s ground at St John Fisher School.  Members of the Harrogate club were joined for the shoot by guests from neighbouring clubs Riggwelter Field Archers and Thirsk Bowmen.

The round was four dozen arrows shot at specially designed target faces and the shoot was handicapped according to bow-type and experience so that all of the archers could compete against each other.  The scoring was exceptional with the records for three of the shoot’s four classes being broken and the other being equalled.

Guest of Honour, Kath Street, presented Chris Francis with the prize for the highest senior score of the day.  Novice archer Jeanette Ives claimed second place and Brian Hiscutt third.  Chris’s score of 255 beat the existing club record, set by tournament organiser Carol Fairbrother back in 2008, by 25 points.

In the under 18 category novice recurve archer Sarah Richardson took first place and also claimed a club record with her score of 233.  Karl Sierevogel of Thirsk was second closely followed by Inez Tully.

The scoring in the under 13 class was particularly close.  Novice Joshua Baron shot superbly and his score of 204 was the third club record of the day.  Second place went to Tom Ketley and third to Ben Daniel, with Harry Street, Chris Hill and Lewis Francis being only a handful of points behind.

Other prizewinners were Jacob Greenwood for the best white and Charles Rawson who equalled the club record set last year by fellow compound archer Jon Overfield for the most golds.
